Safety & Security

Dear Coachella Valley Unified School District Parents,

The safety and well-being of our students are of paramount importance to us, and we want to bring your attention to a growing public health concern in California – the illicit use and abuse of synthetic drugs, with a particular focus on the Fentanyl crisis.

Understanding Synthetic Drugs:

Synthetic drugs are substances designed to mimic the effects of known hallucinogens or narcotics but with slight chemical alterations to evade legal restrictions. These substances pose significant dangers, often with unpredictable and severe consequences.

Types of Synthetic Drugs:

Synthetic drugs encompass a range of substances, including but not limited to:

  • Synthetic cannabinoids (commonly known as "Synthetic Marijuana," "Spice," or "K2")

  • Methamphetamines

  • Bath salts

  • Fentanyl

The Fentanyl Crisis:

Of particular concern is the Fentanyl crisis, which has been impacting communities across our state. Fentanyl is an extremely potent and deadly synthetic opioid. Illicit Fentanyl is frequently mixed with other drugs, making them cheaper, more potent, and highly addictive. It has been found in substances such as heroin, methamphetamine, counterfeit pills, and cocaine. The presence of Fentanyl in any drug significantly increases the risk of a fatal overdose.

One critical aspect to note is that Fentanyl cannot be detected through sight, smell, or taste. This makes it nearly impossible for individuals to know if the drugs they are consuming have been laced with this dangerous substance without additional testing.

Taking Preventative Measures:

To protect our students and families, we urge you to stay informed about the dangers of synthetic drugs and the Fentanyl crisis. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has provided valuable resources and information on this issue. You can find additional information on Fentanyl and its risks on the CDPH's Substance and Addiction Prevention Branch webpage.

Education is Key:

Education is a powerful tool in preventing the misuse of synthetic drugs. We encourage open and honest conversations with your children about the risks associated with these substances. Additionally, please remain vigilant and aware of any signs of drug use among your family members or within our community.

Together, as a community, we can work towards safeguarding our children from the dangers of synthetic drugs and contribute to a safer and healthier future.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your school counselors or administration. Your partnership and commitment to the well-being of our students are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your attention to this crucial matter.

Sincerely,

Gus Paiz
