History & Social Science

CVUSD history–social science instruction helps students understand their communities, the world, and their role as responsible citizens. Students study history, geography, civics, economics, and culture through standards-aligned lessons that encourage inquiry, discussion, and evidence-based thinking.

  • Instruction is aligned with California’s History–Social Science Content Standards and Framework. Topics develop across elementary grade levels and may include:

    • Families, schools, and communities
    • Local and California history
    • United States and world history
    • Geography and the relationship between people and places
    • Government, citizenship, and civic participation
    • Economics and decision-making
    • Diverse cultures, experiences, and perspectives

  • Students learn to approach history by asking questions, examining evidence, comparing perspectives, and developing conclusions. They are encouraged to consider how historical events and decisions continue to influence communities today.

     

  • Students learn from a variety of age-appropriate sources. Primary sources may include letters, photographs, maps, artifacts, speeches, journals, and government documents created during the period being studied. Secondary sources include books, articles, videos, and other materials that explain or interpret historical events.

    Students learn to consider the source, purpose, perspective, and evidence presented in each resource.


     

  • Reading, writing, speaking, and listening are integrated throughout history–social science instruction. Students may:

    • Read informational and historical texts
    • Analyze maps, timelines, charts, and documents
    • Develop questions and conduct research
    • Write informative or evidence-based responses
    • Participate in structured academic discussions
    • Present findings and explain conclusions

  • History–social science instruction helps students understand civic responsibilities, respect different perspectives, participate constructively in their communities, and make informed decisions. Students develop the knowledge and skills needed to become thoughtful, respectful, and engaged citizens.
