Dual Language Education

CVUSD Dual Language Education develops bilingualism, biliteracy, academic achievement, and cross-cultural understanding. Students learn grade-level content in English and Spanish while developing the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to communicate and succeed in a multilingual world.

  • The Dual Language program is designed to help students:

    • Develop proficiency in English and Spanish
    • Read and write at high levels in both languages
    • Meet or exceed grade-level academic standards
    • Build appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives
    • Develop confidence as multilingual learners
    • Prepare for advanced coursework and future college and career opportunities

  • Dual Language programming is offered at designated CVUSD schools and grade levels. Program availability may vary based on student enrollment, staffing, and the district’s established Dual Language pathway.

    Families should review the current list of participating schools and grade levels or contact the Dual Language Education Department for the most current program information.


     

  • Students receive standards-aligned instruction in both English and Spanish. Teachers use district curriculum, the CVUSD Instructional Framework, and research-based Dual Language practices to support content learning and language development.

    Instruction includes:

    • Learning Intentions and Success Criteria
    • Explicit language and content instruction
    • Academic conversations in both languages
    • Reading and writing across content areas
    • Collaborative learning
    • Checks for Understanding and actionable feedback
    • Connections and comparisons between languages

     

  • The amount of instruction provided in each language follows the district’s established language-allocation model and may change as students advance through the grade levels. This planned progression supports strong literacy development, grade-level academic achievement, and increasing proficiency in both English and Spanish.

    Families receive information about the language allocation for their child’s grade during enrollment and program orientation.

  • Enrollment is based on program availability and district procedures. Families interested in Dual Language Education may be asked to:

    1. Complete an interest or enrollment form.
    2. Attend a family orientation.
    3. Review the program’s goals and instructional model.
    4. Understand the importance of consistent attendance and long-term participation.
    5. Complete any required enrollment documents.

    Schools will provide information about application timelines, available space, placement priorities, and wait-list procedures when applicable.

  • Elementary Dual Language Education begins a long-term pathway toward bilingualism and biliteracy. As students progress through middle and high school, they may continue advanced language study and work toward earning the California State Seal of Biliteracy.

    The State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes graduating students who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English and at least one additional language.


     

  • Does my child need to speak Spanish before entering the program?
    Entry expectations may depend on the school, grade level, and available placement. Families should contact the program for current requirements.

    Will learning in two languages affect my child’s academic progress?
    The program is designed to teach grade-level content while developing proficiency in both languages. Teachers regularly monitor academic and language growth.

    How can I support my child if I do not speak both languages?
    Families can support regular attendance, reading habits, homework routines, and positive attitudes toward bilingualism. Speaking and reading in the family’s strongest language also supports literacy development.

    Is long-term participation important?
    Yes. Bilingualism and biliteracy develop over time. Consistent, long-term participation provides students with the strongest opportunity to reach high levels of proficiency in both languages.

    How is student progress measured?
    Teachers use classroom work, district assessments, language proficiency measures, and other evidence to monitor academic and language growth.
