Enrichment and Expanded Learning

CVUSD provides enrichment and expanded learning opportunities that allow students to discover their interests, develop their talents, build new skills, and apply classroom learning in meaningful ways. Programs may be offered during the school day, after school, during the summer, or through special events and community partnerships. Opportunities may vary by school, grade level, enrollment, staffing, and available resources.

✍️ GATE Identification and Services

Gifted and Talented Education, or GATE, supports students who demonstrate advanced abilities, creativity, leadership, or the potential to perform at high levels.

CVUSD uses multiple sources of information when identifying students for GATE services. These may include:  

  • Universal screening results
  • Academic achievement
  • Classroom performance
  • Teacher and family input
  • Student work
  • Additional measures that recognize different strengths and abilities

GATE services may include enrichment, project-based learning, advanced academic experiences, cluster grouping, leadership opportunities, and activities that promote creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.  

📁 Universal Screening

CVUSD provides universal GATE screening at designated grade levels, including grades 2 and 4. Universal screening allows all students in those grades to be considered and helps identify strengths that may not be visible through classroom grades or traditional achievement measures alone.

Families will receive information from their child’s school about screening timelines, results, and any recommended next steps.  

📝 Enrichment and Project-Based Learning

Students may participate in enrichment experiences that extend grade-level learning and encourage them to investigate authentic questions, develop solutions, and create meaningful products.

Project-based learning may include:

  • Research and inquiry
  • Collaborative problem-solving
  • Engineering and design challenges
  • Community or environmental projects
  • Creative writing and media
  • Student presentations
  • Real-world applications of academic learning

These experiences help students build independence, creativity, communication, collaboration, and perseverance. 

💡 Visual and Performing Arts

CVUSD believes the arts are an important part of a well-rounded education. Visual and performing arts experiences allow students to express ideas, build confidence, appreciate diverse cultures, and develop creativity.

Opportunities may include:

  • Visual art
  • Music
  • Theater
  • Dance
  • Recorder
  • Band
  • Cultural arts
  • Student performances and exhibitions
  • Visiting artists and community arts partnerships

🗣️ Proposition 28 Programs

Proposition 28 provides additional funding to expand arts and music education in California public schools. CVUSD uses these funds to increase access to high-quality arts instruction, materials, instruments, performances, and arts learning experiences.

Programs may be provided by credentialed teachers, teaching artists, district staff, or approved community partners. Specific offerings vary by school and are based on student needs, site plans, staffing, and available funding.   

🎓 Elementary Music Progression

CVUSD provides a planned progression of elementary music experiences that helps students develop musical knowledge, creativity, confidence, and performance skills.

The elementary progression may include:  

  • Kindergarten–Grade 2: Foundational music, rhythm, movement, singing, art, or theater experiences
  • Grade 3: Introduction to recorder and basic music notation
  • Grades 4–6: Opportunities for instrumental music and band

Offerings may vary as programs continue to expand across elementary schools.

✍️ Beyond the Bell and After-School Programs

Beyond the Bell and other after-school programs extend learning beyond the regular school day. Students may receive homework support, academic intervention, physical activity, enrichment, arts instruction, STEM experiences, leadership development, and opportunities to build positive relationships.

Program availability, enrollment requirements, schedules, and activities vary by school. Families should contact their child’s school for current registration information.

📁 STEM and Innovation

Students may participate in hands-on STEM and innovation experiences that connect science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Opportunities may include:

  • STEM labs and makerspaces
  • Robotics
  • Coding and computer science
  • Drone technology and aviation
  • Engineering design challenges
  • Environmental science
  • Digital design and media
  • Invention and entrepreneurship  

These experiences help students connect classroom learning to future college, career, and Career Technical Education pathways. 

📝 Summer Learning

CVUSD summer programs provide additional opportunities for academic growth, intervention, exploration, and enrichment. Offerings may include literacy and mathematics support, English Language Development, STEM, arts, physical activity, project-based learning, and field experiences.

Program locations, grade levels, dates, eligibility, and enrollment procedures are shared with families before the summer session.

💡 Competitions, Showcases, and Exhibitions

Students have opportunities to celebrate and share their learning with families, peers, and the community. Events may include:

  • District STEM Showcase
  • Robotics and engineering competitions
  • Science and innovation fairs
  • Art exhibitions
  • Music, band, theater, and dance performances
  • Academic competitions
  • Student project presentations
  • Cultural celebrations
  • End-of-program showcases  

These events allow students to demonstrate their knowledge, receive feedback, build confidence, and take pride in their accomplishments.
