Newcomer Academy

The Newcomer Academy was established as a bridging program for our immigrant students in grades 3-12. It is implemented as a before /after school program at secondary sites and select elementary sites. The goals of the program are to 1) prepare our immigrant students for a successful transitional experience in the United States; 2) foster a welcoming environment where immigrants feel safe to collaborate and learn with other newcomers; and 3) give our immigrants the opportunity to practice English skills and prepare for the ELPAC. The English Learner Dept. designed 6 newcomer units targeting all four domains of language development: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, each unit has a hands-on project related to what students are learning. A pre and post assessment is administered to monitor program success. The Newcomer Academy culminates with an excursion to the Museum of Tolerance and a tour of a nearby university.
